REPUBLICAN NETWORK for UNITY (RNU) Spokesperson, MARTIN ÓG MEEHAN has expressed his revulsion that RUC/PSNI riot squads were used against teenage students in Belfast City Centre yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Meehan said; “Despite being notified that they were involved a peaceful protest, paramilitary police eagerly assaulted and brutally detained demonstrators, many of who were clearly wearing school uniforms. This kind of of treatment can only be described as disgraceful. Particularly given that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child when children's rights were recognised and safeguarded under international law. We are saddened to see that the PSNI/RUC has completely disregarded the human rights of young Irish citizens".
Mr. Meehan concluded; “RNU denounce the use of draconian laws by the RUC/PSNI to attack and arrest defenseless Students and their abhorrent actions have no place in 21st Century Ireland. To treat our youth in such a manner will only serve to instill another generation filled with hatred for the so-called policing body and they will only have themselves, their actions and mistreatment to blame".
