Portmarnock lets fuck it up

category national | anti-capitalism | opinion/analysis author Saturday July 19, 2003 15:43author by penelope Report this post to the editors

Rich Male exclusive Golf course

Since the Council for the women of status have balked at a miserable picket, let's get something else together.

The Irish Golf Open will be played at the exclusively rich male members only Portmarnock Golf course. It will receive state funding and widespread coverage and sponsorship from the capitalist class and its media.

This needs to be disrupted for two reasons.

1. This golf course is a bastion of sexism. The rich male elite of Ireland do much of their business here on the 19th hole.

2. This golf course is a capitalist pig sty. Exclude are not only the entire female population but the entire working class, except those who act as caddies and other staff serving the rich.

Possible actions would be green invasions in heavy boots. General slogan chanting during key shots etc.

Lets fuck it up for them.

Anarchists demand a gender-balanced ruling elite!

I don't think it's so much that women begrudge these people a relaxing game of golf: the issues are a bit more complex than that. The fact is that despite progress in legislation, there are still ways of marginalising women in Irish society, paying them less for equal or even superior work/productivity (it still happens a lot - I've seen it in workplaces) and maintaining glass ceilings. Some of them are quite subtle but no less damaging for that. One of the less subtle ones is the tendency of big business executives to do important deals in all-male golf clubs. Practice has not caught up with legislation. The Irish psyche has not caught up with it either, as is evidenced by "angry man's" comment. And the poor are equally as marginalised by these activities; the issues go well beyond gender.

Tell me more... Is the state funding purely in relation to the holding of the tournament or is it a normal thing at the club?
Either way it's so wrong, if not illegal for the state to use taxpayer's money support a golf club that excludes one group based on gender and wouldn't admit most of us anyway.

I'm no fan of exclusive golf clubs (but at least I dislike men and women's golf equally) but if they're going to waste good land and money on a boring sport, they have some cheek saying women can't join.

By the way it should be noted that the regular picnics at the golf club at the Old Head of Kinsale do not discriminate on the basis of gender, age, colour, creed or golf handicap - but you might have to jump the wall to attend.

I say good luck to you on your protest.

I'm a catholic worker too, I work and I'm catholic and I'm tired of you want to be revolutionaries "preaching" at the rest of us about the immorality of sports and the government here and the governments there. What's is your solution?? How will your other world make a sweet iota of difference just because sport I suppose will be free and unsponsered and without prize money, and the multi-national-corporations would consider putting the money in hunger, and poverty when you catholic workers and your anarchist mates make i'ts trendy enough.
is that it?

Well you can count me out.
I'm proud to be a _conservative_ catholic worker.

if a club has a fee based system surely its members can do what they like - let whomever they want join. I dont hear people wanting to kick down the doors of the Irish countrywomens association on grounds that it is a gender biased organisation. All your ascribed groups would have a selection process on who can join. Im sure the little anarcho clique would be up in arms if some rave kids or swp people wanted to 'join'.

the idea of digging up the greens is so infantile. Do you know how much pride greenskeepers take in their hard work - your leather boots are just going to f### their s### up - not crumble the bastion of commodified sport.

I would suggest having an alternative ad campaign - subvertise all those nissan poster and the like. try and educate and affect not piss off the greenkeepers.

I agree with above. Are there any women who actually want to join anyway? How many?

Why don't wimmin fuck off and have their own golf clubs? Men need these places where they're free of the idle chatter of women.

O, and stop using this 19th century jargon like 'the working classes'. There is no bosses class or workers class anymore. There is free movement up and down the social ladder for all.

Portmarnock does not recieve public funding .The Irish Open does in the form of grants from Bord Failte.Portmarnock has to pay big money to get hosting this competition. The amount of jobs and tourists golf brings to this country is massive and is growing every year. The Ryder Cup will be here in 2006 and will bring millions into this country. Now why don,t you go and save your sad assed protests for outside McDonalds and leave something that is beneficial to this country alone.Easy knowing Penelope has never played a game of golf in her life and never will. Its a closed club and has the right to turn away members for any reason.Should cops be let join GR or Discodisco?Didn't think so.
