This is a genuine query... would appreciate a response from a GR rep Finished cycling around town today, was in ten minds about various potential gifts for the ball n chain.
On the rounds was met with a freshly pasted batch of GR posters, in the usual spots: lamp posts, temple bar walls, electricity boxes, etc. Announcing: "Fight the WTO, from Seattle to Sydney, From Genoa to Geneva" and some other stuff. Meeting at the Central Bank at 3pm on Dame Street, on Sept 13th. Presumably to coincide with the Cancun conference.
Now. I would really hope that this doesnt turn into the usual Indymedia "GR are the SWP" thread, yes we all know that already. Yes we know some people from GR arent very nice, they are a front, they're not democratic, etc. But we've been down this road before, so lets see if we can have something new.
What I'm curious about is this. The poster is very much speaking the language of rebellion, of militant resistance, "Fight the WTO".
But I would like to know what the GR action is going to involve. Is it going to be a table with a petition and some leaflets? Is it going to be a few banners and newspapers?
Or is it actually going to be a demonstration or direct action, against people in Ireland who are supporters of discriminatory capitalism, or the WTO?
Just that I vaguely remember showing up briefly at an anti WTO thing on O'Connell Bridge before, I think it was the one year anniversary of the Seattle demo. It had been organised by GR. It was a bit of a let down. It wasnt anything much apart from an information stall.
So I am just interested what form this action against the WTO this year will take.

Just curious about the game of football
Are you going to, as it were, "reclaim the street" in front of the Central Bank for the game of football?
That's a fairly serious direct action for GR (no offence or anything), but it would be amazing if you did it.
There's not much space to play soccer in the pedestrian plaza at the bank itself so I'm only assuming the game is on the street..?
Any clarification from a GR person would be cool, thanks.

The WTO has reached an agreement to provide inexpensive drugs to poorer African nations to combat diseases such as AIDs.
The WTO provides a forum where co-operative agreements such as this can be made.

It's interesting how the RCP-types and anarchists in the Bay Area (San Francisco) seem to be able to socialise with each other. ~GR is organising a protest at 1.30pm at the central bank on sept 13th that will be held in solidarity with the protests that will take place in mexico against the WTO trade summitt. The EU and USA will push their agenda of trade liberalisation-the removal of all barriers to the flow of capital and trade of goods..barriers include a public health service, transport system, education system, environmental laws, laws to protect workers and the list goes on...GR are organising a football match as a way of highlighting the inequalities that exist in the world and will then have some speakers and after that another action (if the numbers turn up).
The planned direct inaction by GR according to the website will be a football match.
