Well done Paul for bringing to our attention this excellent example of how capitalism and free markets work. When there is competition and choice the consumer is king and producers, whether of goods or services, must strive mightily to satisfy the consumer's needs, or he/she will take his/her custom elsewhere. Contrast that with a socialist system where all the pubs would be owned by the State and customers who complained about prices, quality of service etc would be given the brush-off or, in some caes, a visit from the secret police. Exaggeration? No, that was the norm in eastern Europe for fifty years. Let's hope the principles of competition, whose success has been highlighted here by Paul, are introduced soon into those remaining sheltered areas of the economy where they don't yet apply. Roll on privatisation.

Ha!Ha!Ha!
All the same, there is something to be said about state intervention in the drinks trade, most notable the German Pure beer laws of 1516. To this day, German beer must be breed according to these laws. It tastes much better and will only set you back 65 cents a bottle in the supermarket. Hell, you only pay 6 euro for a litre beer in that tourist beer hall in Munich.
Meanwhile, we still pay 3 euro for piss like fosters. You see, again I have beaten you in corrections. Free markets are not always black and white. Sometime in more developmental economies like Germany, things like beer are better. In the Anglo Saxon model interprted via PDs and 21st century Ireland, we are all forced to drink pisswater.
So there is nothing to be happy abouit and celebrate. Life is still shit over here, Mary Harney or no Mary Harney. God, I'm depressed.
